For many people, dealing with
scoliosis is a daily concern that they have to deal with. Many people go
throughout life suffering from this condition without ever having any real
trouble with it while others go through extreme discomfort. Scoliosis braces,
surgery and physical exercises are some of the possible treatments that
can help alleviate the worst of this condition. Medical science is still a
little confused about this condition and they learn more and more every
day as they try to find a way to not only cure, but to prevent this
condition in people.
Scoliosis is not a disease but rather
a condition. It is marked by the abnormal lateral curvature of the spine
due to a number of reasons. It is progressive, meaning that it can get
worse as time goes on. The most prevalent type of scoliosis is idiopathic
scoliosis that actually means that the doctors do not know what the cause
is. There are other types of scoliosis like congenital scoliosis,
degenerative scoliosis and developmental scoliosis but they occur in a
much lower frequency than idiopathic scoliosis. Idiopathic scoliosis
usually develops during adolescence where the sudden growth spurts that
mark this stage of life can make the condition progress much faster than
it normally would. Scoliosis
braces are often used to help curb scoliosis in
adolescents.
The scoliosis braces are usually
prescribed to slow down the progression of the condition in adolescents
but can also be used for any other age group as well. There are many
different types of braces that are used by doctors to help deal with
scoliosis. The Boston brace is also known as the
thoraco-lumbo-sacral-orthosis. It is a type of tight-fitting jacket that
presses up against the ribcage in an effort to prevent the spine from
curving. The Milwaukee brace or cervico-lumbo-lacral-orthosis is another
commonly used brace. It differs from the Boston brace in that it has large
metal bars that extend around the shoulders to further help against
abnormal spine curvature. The Charleston Bending Brace is a special brace
that is only worn at night and is used when the person is lying on their
side.
Most adolescents that have to wear
scoliosis braces have to do so for five or more years - generally until their
growth spurt stops. Some adults also have to wear a brace for scoliosis
but these are generally the Spincor brace that allows more freedom of
movement while still preventing the spine from curving abnormally. Even
though braces can often help to curb the progress of the condition they
are not always successful. For every person that is helped successfully by
the brace there is someone that will need surgery to correct the abnormal
curve in their spine.
Despite all that, scoliosis braces are
still widely used. They are often combined with physical exercises to
improve flexibility and to further curb abnormal curving. As doctors learn
more about this strange condition the treatments are sure to keep
improving. For now it just enough to say that scoliosis is not the end of
the world and that there are ways to keep it from ruling your
life.
